They Need a Locker Room!
Why? Because a locker room is where people in the game learn essential skills. These guys obviously missed a session or two! Today’s essential skill is something they need. But please indulge me just a bit. When I saw this picture I wished I was a talented cartoonist. The picture communicates on so many levels.
It would be so easy, and funny, to label the occupants of the Land Rover as various political figures. The lion could be labeled as any number of current world/social issues. But political figures and issues rarely have eternal consequences. Eternity is the province of the Church. And Christians can just as easily be depicted in the picture above. Just like those guys, we need an essential survival skill.
Not as Funny, but More Important
Is the Church a stadium or a locker room? In Church: Locker Room or Stadium (and WHY it matters) I dealt with this question. Many Christian leaders are trying to sound an alarm. They are calling the Church to wake up. This post is one of those calls. It’s an attempt to give us a survival skill and a needed resource. What is today’s essential survival skill?
The guys in the Land Rover lack an awareness of their situation. Is the Church aware of its situation and surroundings?
Go to the Locker Room!
I don’t mean literally, although… I mean our paradigm has to change. One of two things is about to happen.
ONE: The church remains in stadium mode. We continue to be concerned about crowd size and comfort at the “stadium” while we impact nothing around us. The world will continue to degenerate and it’s easy to see Christ’s return being near.
TWO: We understand the necessity of the locker room. We need leaders and churches who aren’t driven by the size of the or the comfort of the stadium. We need them to equip, train, and encourage Christians to be about the business of making disciples, not attenders. If that happened in very Christian church today, it’s not too late to see an outpouring of God’s Spirit and revival in our time. The question is, do we have sufficient AWARENESS? Many do, and HERE is a good example of a pastor/leader calling us to act.
Locker Room Resource
The need for the locker room is evidenced by the research cited in The Nones, the Dones and the Fix. I encourage you to get a copy of Jeff Mann’s book (see links here) and find out what a new paradigm would look like in your congregation.
And just for added encouragement, let me say the Scriptural truths Jeff cited in his book are the same truths and principles we have been implementing over the past four years with the pastors in the Mathes Pastor Training School. I have shared the results of that ministry with you numerous times.
Soli Deo Gloria!
P.S. – What happens when people refuse to change their paradigm? Well, this picture is a great example! I tried to use this on a boosted ad in Facebook. Their content policy trumped the humor of the picture therefore I couldn’t boost my post in order to get this message out. You can HELP by sharing this post through Facebook and other social media – eternity does hang in the balance!!!
The Locker Room – A New Paradigm of Church
The author, Jeff Mann, is a friend of mine. You can read about him in the book. But his book will challenge you and open your thoughts to what the Church was always intended to be. The stadium model isn’t working, maybe it never worked, or maybe we just got away from the game and got consumed with pleasing the crowd. Remember, it was the crowd that yelled, Crucify Him, Crucify Him! Get your copy through the Amazon link above or below!
