How does one reach a monumental goal? It requires strategic thinking and action. That’s true whether one’s mission is to raise Godly children or spread the Gospel as far as possible. Ancient strategies worked and they can still be effectively employed.
Mission in Macedonia
My friend, Dan, and I arrived yesterday in Samana on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. It’s a very different kind of place compared to our other Dominican mission sites. Since the moment we arrived thoughts of the Apostle Paul’s mission strategy have flooded my mind.
Paul’s mission was the Gospel. He traveled much the known world of his day to tell people about Jesus. But his travel and work were not random. He was strategic in his thinking and action.
Mission: World at My Doorstep
Modern enterprises do what Paul did. Look for the traffic patterns and plant yourself there. What does McDonald’s do before building a new franchise? They study the traffic and other factors to determine in advance if their restaurant will be successful. We should be no less diligent about sharing the Gospel! Paul did that.
He went to port cities, trade route cities, political capitols, and other influential centers to win people to Jesus. What happened? People believed and churches sprang up. New churches are a predictable, intended result of preaching the Good News to the lost. And what does any of that have to do with a little village called Samana?
Strategic Mission Opportunity
When we arrived yesterday I sent a note to a few friends. My request for their prayers was serious. But I did admit to them I felt just a little bad asking them to pray for us while we are in such a picturesque place.
Samana Bay is a world destination. We are staying in a little hotel owned by one the members of our host church. The signs around the hotel are in many languages. Why does the world come here?
Humpback whales migrate to Samana Bay to give birth. Whale watchers come here from around the world. The church in Samana does not have to go to the world. The world comes here!
Part of a new pastor training school in Samana will be teaching, equipping, and encouraging pastors to take advantage of the opportunity that is right on their church doorsteps! Having Christians who work in hotels, car rental places, charter services, and many other businesses can send new Christians to many places around the world.
So, please, pray for this opportunity. An ancient strategy is just what needs to be employed in Samana!
Soli Deo Gloria!
