I had intended to share some amazing news in this post. Prayer has been offered and it has been mightily answered. That story needs to be told. It will have to wait. The reason:
Pigs in a blanket – Fry ’em like bacon
When we got home we turned on the news. What did we see? People walking up and down streets shouting this vile, anti-police rant. What else did we hear? Another police officer was shot and killed today. And of course there were “knowledgeable” commentators promptly saying there is no connection between the two. Really? If what people see and hear can’t impact their actions then why do businesses spend millions per minute on Super Bowl commercials? And how come I didn’t see major political figures condemning this filth? Doesn’t silence give consent?
But this isn’t really social or political commentary. God actually addresses the fact that men honor vile things. When did His words catch my eye and ear? It was in my quiet time this morning. Conicidence? I don’t think so. Notice the end of Psalm 12:
And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. You, LORD, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked, who freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human race.
The Vile and the Valuable
My unshared good news is the result of prayer circles. More circles are needed. Why? Today’s events are just the latest in a growing line of vile things being honored by men. You can recite the list as well as I can. But notice what God calls those who honor something vile: wicked.
The Psalmist also tells us where safety is to be found: The Lord will keep the needy safe and will protect us… Who needs protecting? Do you think it’s just the police or just one activist group? No. When a society honors that which is vile everyone will eventually need protection. What’s the solution?
Did you notice how the Psalmist showed the value of God’s Word? His comparison was to refined silver and gold. When we do not value His Word, we are in danger of honoring that which is vile. What’s worse, we won’t know we are doing it! I can only assume those supporting a call to kill fellow human beings don’t know how vile it is. We only know the difference between the vile and the valuable because the Word of God enlightens us.
Let me ask you, invite you, and encourage you to pray. Pray for what? If you’ll pray, I’m sure the list will grow, but you start with this short list:
- God’s power to overcome wickedness
- Enlightenment – For you and others to see and value God’s truth. Remember, people believe a lie because they are deceived!
- Protection – Your own, your family, for other believers, your pastor, church members, etc.
- Boldness – Faith to believe and declare in the face of mounting opposition
- Every member of your local police department
Do you know your local police officers? It doesn’t matter. Pray for them anyway. Can you find out their names? Great; do it and pray for them by name. Can’t find out? Pray for them anyway; God knows their names. Pray for their safety, judgment, skills, and awareness as they do a very difficult job. What’s that job? They are part of what God uses to protect YOU!
