Journey Group Devotional – 9/21/15
If you were in a Journey Group discussion this week, you heard discussion about things like choice, predestination, and bread. That may seem to be an odd combination, but that is exactly what appears together in the middle of John 6. Just to help a little, here are some of the study notes for that passage. Questions? Leave a comment and we can keep discussing it here!
Celebrate: You, God’s chosen, have been given to Jesus.
Verse 37: All that the Father gives Me will come to Me. The follow-up is in verse 39: This is the will of Him Who sent Me, that I should lose nothing of all that He has given Me. This comes around again 5 verses later and also in verse 65. God’s chosen ones come to Jesus. Who are they? The ones God’s foreknew:
For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren – Romans 8:29
But how many did God invite? Everyone has received God’s invitation. There are multiple references, but these two prove the point:
Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, Matthew 11:28
And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely, Revelation 22:17
The closing strains of Scripture are God’s invitation for all who will to come and drink freely. For those who accept the invitation, salvation is secure in the Father’s giving and the Son’s keeping. Notice Philippians 1:6 –
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
The good work Paul mentions is our salvation and all that follows in it. God will complete (perfect) what He started in you!!!
