Life Lessons: Following = Having
I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life. – Jesus
Jesus’ statement in John 8:12 has huge implications. Notice that when we follow Him we have Him (…will have the light of life). Connect the statements like this: I am the light . . . Whoever follows Me . . . will have the light . . .” Jesus is telling us:
- If you follow Me, you have Me
- I am yours
- I am your Shepherd
- I am your Sacrifice
- I am your Living Water
- I am your Bread from Heaven
- I am your God and your Light
We can have the light of life (end verse 12). Light and life are a matched pair. John connected them back in chapter 1:4 –
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
Life gives light. Jesus has life within Himself. He had the power to lay down His life and take it up again. The life Jesus shares with those who follow Him gives them light. As Isaiah wrote, The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Jesus comes to us when we are dead in sin and blind to the light. Then Jesus imparts His life to us. It is at this point that we see, because we have Light. The eyes of our hearts are opened, and divine light floods into our souls. That’s how we have the light of life.
Life Lessons: Living Life Requires Light
In these ways, Jesus is the light of the world. If we follow Him now, we have Him as Light in advance of the final judgment day. As Light, Jesus will reveal our sins. But that is a good thing. Think of it in the way you would receive an early diagnosis of cancer. If the diagnosis is made in time, treatment is less invasive and successful. Premature death is avoided. Of course, by responding to Jesus now we have eternal life, not just extended life. Jesus will also reveal all the beauty of your life as well. Jesus lights the way for our lives to reveal His glory and the glory of the Father.
On a day-to-day basis, Jesus is the light by which we see:
Life Lessons: Don’t Hide the Light
When one has Jesus as their Light, NOTHING will be the same again. Everything looks different in the light of Christ. But His light is meant to fill the earth, not just you or me. The light of His glory is to fill the earth as the waters cover the sea. His light will banish:
But until those things are gone, the Light of His presence goes with us as we bear life’s sorrows, pains, calamities, and even the death of loved ones. So two important questions need to be asked:
- Do you have the Light?
- Are you sharing the Light?
