Lifelines: Ask the Right Questions
Ever hear someone asking the wrong question? Parents hear this often! Kids are full of questions, but the questions may not be the ones that need to be asked. We have to teach them to ask the right questions. Business owners and managers have the same problem. And believe it or not, we can have that problem when it comes to faith! Jesus asked the right question of His disciples. His question is one every person must answer:
Who do you say that I am?
Lifelines: Perspective Matters
We have already seen three storms in the events described in John 6:
In all four storms, there is an issue of perspective. In all cases, we must view things from God’s perspective, not our own. This is especially apparent in the Storm of Decision. The deeper we go into John 6, the more we see the errors of the crowd. They were thinking from their own perspective. They were hungry. They wanted physical food, not spiritual food. They wanted to be entertained by Jesus’ tricks. To them, everything was all about them and their immediate wants. And as much as we might like to belittle them for their views, don’t we often have that problem? We don’t look at our storms from God’s perspective. Can’t quite grasp that? Try this:
Everything is not about YOU!
The more comfortable we get with that truth, the better off we will be.
Lifelines: Answer the Right Questions – Correctly
Jesus made an astounding statement to the crowd. He said, I AM the Bread of Life. They thought they were safe because their ancestors had eaten the manna in the desert. Jesus reminded the crowd that those who ate of that bread died. But Jesus said all who eat of the Bread of Life will live forever.
The short version of the many remaining verses of John 6 is this: They couldn’t handle it. Jesus gave them the right answer to His most important question. But they asked the wrong questions, they were focused on themselves, and they chose to reject Jesus. In essence, they answered the right question incorrectly. They refused to believe that Jesus is Who He says He is.
Lifelines: Affirm the Right Decision
When the crowd turned back from following Jesus, He addressed the 12 disciples:
Will you, too, turn back?
Peter, in his usual way, answered for the group. For them, and for us, his words are instructive:
Lord, where will we go? Only You have the words of life!
Soli Deo Gloria!
