Journey Group Devotional, 8/27/15
Do you remember those school days on the playground? It was time to choose teams for kickball, softball, or some other team activity. You were standing there just waiting, hoping one of the leaders would call your name; hoping you would get “picked.”
As the selection process proceeded your name was never called. Then, you were the last one standing there. The team leader finally says, “OK, I’ll take you.” What a blow to self confidence. The feelings of self-worth and value just went down the tubes. But it could get worse!
After you were picked, did you have to play in right field? “Right field” is baseball’s least-likely-to-get-the-ball position. Every sport has one. You were put in a spot where you could do the least amount of damage to the team. That was a bummer of a day! You knew then and there that you would never be voted “most likely to succeed.” You labeled yourself a “looser.”
Are you depressed yet? Are you reminded that Journey Group members (all Christians) ought to be about the business of encouragement?
In John 5 we read a story of a “looser” that finally “got picked.” The lineup was a group of sick, lame, and unlikely-to-succeed individuals. There were apparently several people around who needed healing. Yet the Lord chose one in particular. The question arises, “Why?” What caused Jesus to single this man out and go to him saying, “Rise up, take up your bed and walk?”
He didn’t ask for help. In fact, He didn’t even know who Jesus was. This man was evidently the only one Jesus healed that day. Why?
“Grace” is the only answer I can see. And aren’t you glad to see the glory of our Savior, full of grace and truth?
The glory of God’s grace was revealed through this healing. Later that day Jesus found this man in the temple and spoke truth to him, That’s grace, too! Jesus addressed the deeper issue of this man’s spiritual health. Jesus said to him, “…sin no more…”, John 5:14.
So if you are a fellow believer in Jesus Christ, celebrate! You’ve been picked – by the very Son of God! And remember:
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast…, Ephesians 2:8-9.
NOTE: To any non-believer: Jesus came, “To seek and to save that which was lost,” Luke 19:10. He is, “Not willing that any should perish, but that all come to repentance,” 2 Peter 3:9. His desire is to include you in His forever family, John 3:16. You can call on Him today. “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved,” Romans 10:13.
