There is the textbook definition and then there is a picture. And pictures are worth thousands of words!
The Textbook Definition
You have probably heard it this way many times:
- Grace is God’s unmerited favor, or
- Getting something great that we absolutely do not deserve
The Picture – John 5
There were many sick people around the pool. Each person there was as needy as the man Jesus chose. So, it must have been humbling for the man to know that out of the crowd of sick folks Christ chose him.
And Jesus is more than qualified to choose! Notice verse 21:
What does that mean? It means that we are called to salvation. Did you see the imperative? Jesus told the man whom He chose:
Take up your bed and walk.
What did that walk look like? John doesn’t detail this until later in the chapter. Jesus told the man to stop sinning. The Apostle Paul said it another way:
Now connect it all. The man was healed of a physical sickness, but he was healed for a holy calling.
Verse 15 tells us that the man went and told the Jews it was Jesus Who had made him well. That, too, serves to instruct us.
Just as we are born dead in trespasses in sin, we are called to salvation for holiness. God offers to heal us from our sin by calling us to salvation. Our call to salvation is to glorify God by telling people about this Jesus Who has made us well. We are healed for making disciples.
What can we do once we are healed? Walk!
