The crowd that listened to Jesus worried about food and clothing. He called them people of little faith. When His disciples were afraid of the storms, He called them men of little faith. When Peter began to walk to Jesus on the water, then doubted and sank, Jesus rescued Peter. As He caught Peter, Jesus said Peter’s faith was little and asked him, Why did you doubt?
Last week I wrote Prayer is What’s in a Name. Obviously faith is also part of what the Father reveals to us in His names. Deliverer was part of last week’s post. When Jesus rescued Peter from the waves, He demonstrated His power as Deliverer. But based on Jesus’ response to Peter, it seems He preferred being the Object of Peter’s faith to being Peter’s Deliverer. And that is a lesson worth examining!
The Lord’s revealed names provide us many ways to address Him in prayer. They also show us what we can trust Him for; how to exercise faith in Him. I need Him as Deliverer. I can ask Him to deliver from difficult or evil circumstances. God delivered Daniel from evil circumstances. He is still more than capable of closing the mouth of a lion, a gossip, or a slanderer. One pretty much equals the other! How does that relate to faith?
Let me share a prayer that is often close to my heart. The expression varies from day to day, but the thoughts are embodied below:
Lord, deliver me from myself. Keep me from doubt, keep me from believing in myself, and keep me from trusting in my thoughts and abilities. Deliver me from the things I can see because they are only shadows and temptations. Give me faith to trust in what I cannot see, because You are better and more reliable than anything I can see. And please deliver me from the evil one. And when I fail, be my Deliverer. Amen.
Finally, here is another name that helps with all the above and so much more:
Deuteronomy 7:9, Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.
Thessalonians 5:24, Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. Revelation 19:11, And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.
Soli Deo Gloria!
