Your Christmas list is challenging. And you will check it at least twice before you declare yourself ready for Christmas. I’d like to help. In fact, I need to help with those last minute list checks! So I’ll start with a riddle. What can’t be bought but can be given? The answer is why I want to help with checking the lists!
Checking Christmas Lists
Just so you know, I’ll be linking back to this post over the next several days. My plan is to help you see some things with fresh eyes. And I can assure you that will be challenging and insightful. My teaching/preaching opportunities this year have been to help people rethink the ways they view Scripture. We often have to set aside everything we think we know in order to see and learn what the Word really says. It’s a challenging task but the effort is rewarding. But, about my riddle and your list…
I am asking you to put opportunity on your list. You won’t find opportunity on your Amazon search page. Who could possibly put a price on it? But it can be given at very affordable prices! And opportunity is like one side of a coin. Heads and tails come together on the same coin. Opportunity makes a difference. And that difference is the other side of the coin!
Christmas List: Opportunity
You already know about the opportunities we have to make a difference in the lives of others because that’s what your ministry support accomplishes. And we have a pretty big need to put opportunity on our lists for the boys in the Barahona orphanage. Our support structure for the orphanage is changing. Several of you sponsor boys in this orphanage. And you may recognize the boy you sponsor in the pictures in this post. Thank you for being so generous in your support. It makes a huge difference. But additional support is necessary. The amount currently needed is about $3,000.00. And that’s not a huge number.
You don’t have to read this blog very often to know things can get pretty blunt sometimes. In light of the paragraph above, I’m not really looking for people who supported an orphan all through the year to contribute even more. Each of those folks have contributed about $500.00 during 2018. The Christmas lists I’d like to see extended don’t currently include orphan sponsorship or orphanage support. Maybe that describes you! There’s info below to help you extend your Christmas list. But what I’m after is much bigger than orphanage donations!
The Real Gift – The True Recipient
Orphans who have opportunity also have hope. And that is essential. And this brings us to a Biblical principle I want to examine over the next few days. We are in the middle of the season characterized by these words:
Good news of great joy
Do the boys need your assistance? Yes. They are also in need of your prayers. But that’s not the end of the addition I am asking you to make on your Christmas list. You see, giving opportunity allows opportunity to be received. And in that there is good news of great joy all 365 days of the coming year. Puzzled? Good! Tune in for the next post. But first, a word about money-where-my-mouth-is.
December is filled with necessary activities. For me, that activity is called year-end-donations. It’s necessary because contributions tend to fall off during the first quarter of any year. And I offer this brief word just to demonstrate my heart in the matter at hand. It would be easier (and self serving) to confine my efforts to raising contributions that will enable all of our ministry opportunities for 2019. That’s necessary work. And I am aware that most people have a finite pool of resources. Most of us can’t give to every worthy cause. We just don’t have that many dollars.
If you have been planning a general contribution and would like to add a donation for the orphanage, that’s great! But if you can’t do both, then please send an opportunity-providing contribution for the orphanage. I’ll let you know when we hit our goal. Then the rest of the donations can help with the whole slate of ministry for 2019. And please pray for these necessary December fund raising activities.
